Family-Owned Woolen Mill in PEI Canada

Fiber artists in North America, are faced with a declining number of places to find reasonably priced, quality wool fiber. Mills have fallen off one after another. I am pleased to report that I found (even though it wasn't hiding) a source of well-made, nicely done yarn for my work. A family-owned enterprise, MacAusland's Woolen Mills in Prince Edward Island Canada, www.macauslandswoollenmills.com makes a line of two and three ply pure wool yarn in a variety of colors that are not fancy, but work up well. The yarns are supplied in four-ounce skeins, in spinning oil. Their color card features a good variety of colors, and some plied combinations that may be unique to this mill. MacAusland's line of natural undyed colors are lovely.

I don't know if the sheep involved are organic or politically correct -- I don't know them personally. I like the product. Having grown up on a sheep farm, I can say the quality of the wool is very nice. For weavers, MacAusland yarns vary between 880 ypp and 500 ypp. For knitters, the two-ply is approximately sport weight, the three-ply somewhere (in my limited experience) between DK and Worsted. Their prices are exceptional. A four-ounce skein at retail is $2.90, with a wholesale discount for orders over 25 lbs, shipping not included.
